Technical information about Olympic 10m Air Rifle and Pistol

Overview

10m Olympic shooting events are precision air gun sports governed by the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF). These events are shot indoors at a distance of 10 meters using 4.5mm (.177) caliber air guns.

This website covers two main ISSF disciplines:

  • 10m Air Rifle - Shot from a standing position using specialized rifles weighing up to 5.5kg
  • 10m Air Pistol - Shot one-handed from a standing position using specialized pistols

Rules and Regulations

Beginner Tip: Don't feel overwhelmed by all the rules! As an athlete, you'll learn everything you need to know gradually through your coach and club. When you're starting out, focus on the fundamentals of shooting - the competition details will come naturally as you progress.

Common Rules

  • All shots must be fired at a distance of 10 meters
  • 4.5mm (.177) caliber ammunition only
  • Electronic scoring systems are standard at major competitions
  • Athletes must comply with strict equipment and clothing regulations

Competition Format

Both events follow a similar competition structure:

  • Qualification round: 60 competition shots within 75 minutes (plus 15 minutes if using paper targets)
  • Unlimited sighting shots during 15-minute preparation and sighting time
  • Top 8 shooters advance to finals
  • Finals consist of 24 shots with progressive eliminations
